What is the BPSD Registry?

The BPSD Registry is a quality registry designed to identify underlying causes of unrest. The registry also includes suggestions for measures to reduce the symptoms. Investigation and mapping can show how and when symptoms appear throughout the day and in which situations they arise. Appropriate actions are taken and then evaluated.

It is estimated that about 90% of all people with dementia at some point suffer from BPSD symptoms in the form of anxiety, aggression, hallucinations, sleep disorders, and delusions. The purpose of the BPDS registry has been to investigate the severity and frequency of BPSD symptoms in the individual. It could be pain that needs to be addressed, causes in the surrounding environment, or staff's treatment that gives rise to the behavior. The staff should work as a team to try to find possible causes of the behavioral disorder. Education in BPSD has led to changes in dementia care in recent years. Special educators are recruited from the operations and with the help of pedagogically designed training materials, many at the units are connected users of the registry.

Examples of measures based on the BPSD Registry

Measures to counteract BPSD symptoms may be, for example, outdoor activities, activities, music, massage, or gymnastics. Implemented measures should be evaluated. Symptoms of BPSD are graded and if the measures have been effective, it is seen in the follow-up registration.
